Toy Safety - Safe Play Guide
- Make sure you buy the right toy for the right age child particularly if they are under 3 years old.
- Check, read and follow all manufacturers safety advice and instructions relating to the products that you purchase or receive as gifts.
- Pay particular attention that smaller children do not have access to older children’s toys as many are unsuitable and can contain small parts which constitute a choking hazard particularly to children under the age of 3.
- Be aware of the risk of toys containing small magnets. Swallowing a small magnet or magnets can cause serious and potentially fatal injury.
If you become aware that your child has swallowed a magnet or magnets, call your doctor immediately or take your child to the nearest medical centre or hospital.
- Be careful about purchasing second hand toys as they may be damaged and will probably not have the original Manufacturers product safety advice and information.
- Check toys periodically and dispose of any that have been broken or damaged
- Make sure that children are adequately supervised at all times.
- Encourage 'tidy up time' from a young age. Not only will this help prolong the life of toys and promote responsible behaviour, it will also reduce the risk of trips and falls caused by toys left lying around.
